Server Administration - Server Integrity
In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 3, Part B3
This section focuses on optimising server performance, activity logging, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery. Some of the material is very good while some left, in my opinion, a bit to be desired.
System performance, appears to concentrate mostly on upgrading the hardware rather than maximising the performance from the existing configuration. Upgrading is not optimising, by my definition.
Fault Tolerance and Disaster Recovery are dealt with reasonably well, but both, if you are serious about these subjects, should be covered in far greater depth. In my experience backups are no guarantee of protection. A backup is only good if it will restore successfully. In my experience, and it may be down to my failings, I have never had a full system backup restore fully.
Chapter Headings
As I have done with the other sections, the navigation links, to the left, are somewhat abbreviated so I have included the full chapter titles here:
- Chapter 1 - Mission-Critical Servers
- Chapter 2 - Optimising Servers
- Chapter 3 - Logging Activity
- Chapter 4 - WebTrends Log Analyser
- Chapter 5 - Introduction to Security
- Chapter 6 - SSL
- Chapter 7 - Proxy Servers
- Chapter 8 - Introduction to Fault Tolerance
- Chapter 9 - Disaster Assessment and Recovery
I installed WebTrends Log Analyzer but was unable to get it to work. It looks to be a very comprehensive and able package, but I think my IIS installation wasn't quite right, or perhaps I installed to the wrong machine.
