Server Administration - Configuring
In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 3, Part A1
This starts by differentiating between backbone services and mission-critical services, then goes on to discuss server system elements and bus types. It then considers the popular operating systems: Microsoft Windows family, Novell Netware and Unix. The installation of these systems is mentioned but in a very brief fashion. The TCP/IP configuration covers Windows 2000 and Linux, and is reasonably detailed.
DNS is covered in some detail, but more on the theory than the practice. Not surprisingly perhaps, quite a large chunk of this section is devoted to Web Servers. Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) is covered in great detail and Apache gets reasonable coverage too.
Chapter Headings
As I have done with the other sections, the navigation links, to the left, are somewhat abbreviated so I have included the full chapter titles here:
- Chapter 1 - Installation and Configuration Issues
- Chapter 2 - Internetworking Operating Systems
- Chapter 3 - Network Access
- Chapter 4 - TCP/IP and Linux
- Chapter 5 - Introduction to DNS
- Chapter 6 - Introduction to Web Servers
- Chapter 7 - Introduction to IIS
- Chapter 8 - Access in IIS
- Chapter 9 - Virtual Servers
- Chapter 10 - Apache Server
I am fortunate in having a number of servers at my disposal so I have been able to work through most of this section "hands-on". However, this has stopped short of being able to install Linux and Apache. I suppose I could have tried, I have used Solaris in the past, but have never had to install it. I may be wrong, but I don't think installing Linux is straight-forward, I think that it involves building a kernel with all the options and features you would like the installation to contain.
