Internet Fundamentals
In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 1, Part A
When it says fundamentals that's exactly what it means. Lot's of basic facts and figures which don't require a lot of understanding but will require a great deal of memory to take it in and retain it all. Reputedly one of the most difficult exams to pass, presumably because it relies on sheer memory. There is no hands-on work in this part, it is all reading or listening to the Interactive Training CD and taking copious notes.
I, personally, don't like the Interactive Training CDs, so I simply don't use them. Everything on these CDs, at least everything you need, is in the notes. This particular observation applies to the whole course
Chapter Headings
As I have done with the other sections, the navigation links, to the left, are somewhat abbreviated so I have included the full chapter titles here:
- Chapter 1 - Overview of the Internet and the World Wide Web
- Chapter 2 - Browsing the World Wide Web
- Chapter 3 - Security and the Web
- Chapter 4 - Electronic Mail
- Chapter 5 - Basics of Using FTP, Newsgroups, Gopher, Telnet, and Other Services
- Chapter 6 - Search Engines
- Chapter 7 - Searching the Web to Gain Market Intelligence
- Chapter 8 - Objects, Plug-ins, and Viewers
- Chapter 9 - Electronic Commerce Fundamentals
I have omitted one chapter from this section which was entitled Internet Technology, but, in the course, this was presented more as an appendix than as an explanatory chapter.
I found this section rather dry and tedious mainly, I guess, because it wasn't hands-on. In that respect, I felt that I wasn't accomplishing anything. I have also been contacted by other CIW students who have taken one look at this section, decided that this course does not meet their needs, and given it up entirely! Please don't do this, get through the boring stuff, the course does improve.
