Server Administration

In a Nutshell - CIW Course Section 3

Part A is very much an introduction, and covers the general theory behind many of the concepts. In keeping with much of this course, some of these principles differ from my understanding. For example: NTFS permissions, apparently, are each identified with a letter like "x" for execute and "d" for delete, but when asked where these letters are visible on the system, the tutors suddenly don't understand the question. I sent several emails to the tutor trying to resolve this. Each email was answered, but the question wasn't!

Part B is more detailed, and if you have the available equipment, can be very hands-on. I do have a Windows 2000 server which I was able to set-up with DNS, WINS and Telnet to test out all the scenarios depicted in the course.

Despite having a fairly detailed computing background, I was still able to learn some useful new tips and tricks. I guess an old dog can be taught new tricks given the right incentive, now where is that old marrow bone?
